I’ve had a lot of issues with my feet in the past. I used to be an avid runner, but then my feet started to hurt. This was my unwelcome introduction to Plantar Fasciitis – a foot condition that once you get, it is pretty difficult to entirely eliminate. One of the most noticeable symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis is stabbing pain in, near, or around the heel. The most common age groups that are affected by this condition are ages 19 to 40 and 41 to 60. In addition, you are also more prone to Plantar Fasciitis if you are a runner or do not wear proper footwear.

Still, it can be treated if you are willing to explore the different options. Some of the more effective plantar fasciitis treatments are simple stretches, specialized shoe inserts, night splints, shoes with good arch and heel support, and the more invasive injections and surgery options. In some cases, the doctor may also recommend physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles in your lower leg to better stabilize your heel and ankle. During physical therapy they may teach you how to apply athletic tape to support the bottom of your foot until your muscles are strengthened enough to stabilize your heel on their own.

Note, if you just want our top recommendation for THE best overall shoe for plantar fasciitis, then we recommend the ASICS Gel Nimbus 18 for men and women with high arches and the Asics Gel Kayana 22 for people with flat feet. These are running shoes, but we point to these as the best pick because you can use these for everything — walking shoes, sports shoes, hiking, etc. An alternative pick if you don’t intend do do anything sporty (such as running) and only need shoes for casual use or for working all day on your feet are the Orthaheel Walkers.

I’ve found stuff that works and many other people have too. But there is no one solution that works for everyone, and as of yet, no magical cure. Try different therapies such as shoe inserts, stretches, or finding the right shoe for your foot type to cut down on the symptoms. Sometimes different combinations work for different people.

But a good pair of shoes sure helps too.

Before We Get Started

Do realize that finding a pair of shoes that works with YOUR Plantar Fasciitis is going to be a bit of a trial and error sort of process. Don’t believe whatever sales pitch you read on some websites saying X shoe or Y product will absolutely cure your condition.

This simply is not the case. Your feet are different than someone else’s. SO don’t expect what necessarily works for someone else will absolutely work for you. As such, you will probably have to buy a few different pairs of shoes and test them out to see how your feet to respond to them.

I’ve talked to a lot of different people who have this condition and the solutions (and shoes) that work for one person often do not work so well for other people. So keep this in mind: Plantar Fasciitis is a highly individualized condition. Everyone walks differently, everyone runs differently, and everyone has a different stride and different way they put weight on their feet. This means that if you are looking for a good shoe that won’t aggravate your plantar fasciitis condition, you may need to try a few different duds before you find a winner.

What to Look for In Plantar Fasciitis Shoes – How to Choose the Right One

Depending on what you want to be doing in your shoes, your type of stride as you walk (do you supinate or pronate), and how high or how flat your feet are, your type of shoe choice will drastically vary.

If you are going to be doing something with a lot of hard impacts on the heel (like running), you’ll want to choose a shoe with strong to very strong arch support, shock absorption, and good cushioning. As to how much of each, well, that depends on your specific feet.

There are a couple things to keep in mind when finding a shoe to wear if you have PF:

  • Strong Heel Support
  • Good Arch Support
  • Soft Cushioning

Now there is a high degree of variability between each of these that work better for some people than others. But in general, you do want to choose a shoe that has strong heel support and firm arch support with softer cushioning.

About Pronation and Choosing Running Shoes

In general, you’ll want to look at your arch — how high or how low it is. This often can determine (but not always) by your gait as you walk — whether you under pronate, over pronate or are neutral.

There are three general categories: neutral pronation (normal arch), under pronation or supination (low arch or flat feet), over pronation (very high arch).

Different shoes are built for DIFFERENT foot arch types, so if you are an underpronator who buys and wears over pronation shoes, you could be causing INJURY to yourself. This is even more important if you have plantar fasciitis!

If you are looking for everyday casual shoes, you are going to need something that is soft on your feet, but provides you with enough support that your PF will not flare up.  The following are a list of casual shoes, divided between male and female, so you can find the perfect shoes that will cradle your feet throughout the day.

Why Trust Our Recommendations?

So why should you trust our recommendations?

We give our best effort to give as accurate recommendations for shoes that are actually effective treatments for Plantar Fasciitis. However, we absolutely recommend that you do your own diligent research. We’ve spent dozens of hours writing this article and doing the research. We’ve looked at medical journals, shoe forums, foot pain forums, Reddit, amazon reviews, queried people with PF for shoe recommendations, recommendations given in our comment section and we’ve even given our own personal recommendations for what shoes WE have used that have worked (yes, the author of this article is in fact a former Plantar Fasciitis sufferer!).

With that out of the way, let’s start talking shoes. I try to keep this list updated with ALL the newest shoe models as the come out. As of 2017, this list should have the current available models.

We comprehensively give a category by category recommendation for all the major types of shoes in this article for both men and women. Best Running Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

These are our recommendations for running shoes for men AND women who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. Keep in mind that ALL of these recommendations come highly recommended by people, but you may need to try a few different models before you find the one that best suits you.

Many runners experience Plantar Fasciitis at some point. Many times it is caused by the wrong running shoes, a sudden increase in mileage, or just the structure of your foot can cause inflammation in the plantar fascia.  In addition, overpronation, overuse, and shoes that are old or that have rips in them can cause inflammation as well.

Note that while these are RUNNING SHOES and are designed for running, you can just as well use them as walking shoes or casual shoes. As such we feel running shoes are often the most versatile of the plantar shoe recommendations we can give, since you can use them for ALL activities you might need them for (sports, walking, etc). However, IF you are looking for a more casual walking shoe, or tennis shoe, see one of our other categories. For MAXIMUM stability and firm heel support, you may want to consider a walking shoe over a running shoe, which tend to have harder heels and soles. If you want PURE running shoe recommendations, please check out our Best Running Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis article instead.

1 Asics Gel Nimbus 18

If you have high arches, the Gel Nimbus 18 is our BEST PICK for Plantar Fasciitis running shoes.

For Men with High Arches

ASICS Men's Gel Nimbus 18 Running Shoe, Racing Red/Black/Silver, 10 M US

ASICS Gel Nimbus 18

For Women with High Arches

ASICS Women's Gel-Nimbus 18 Running Shoe, Turquoise/Iris/Methyl Blue, 8.5 M US

Asics Gel Nimbus 18

This is our top choice for plantar fasciitis shoes for high arched people if we have to pick one. It’s sturdy, steady, comfortable and many, many people we’ve talked to, interviewed, and read recommendation for have pointed this shoe out as gold.

The Nimbus 18 is a big winner in the cushioning department and pretty much takes the cake as of 2015 & 2016 for combining firm heel and arch support into a comfortable running shoe design. The Gel Nimbus shoes are a bit stiffer than you might find in some of the other competing brands such as New Balance Running shoes.

Overall, if it comes to one pair of shoes for the average person with average feet (i.e. nonflat), then the best shoe you can get is the Asics Gel Nimbus 18. This shoe is a real winner because of the vastly improved midsole over earlier models. The better-supported heel helps provide more stability to the foot – something that’s essential if you don’t want to aggravate plantar fasciitis.

Note that the Asics Gel Nimbus 18 are best suited for people who have a higher arch (we call this supination). If you have relatively flat feet (over pronator), then you want to look at the Asics Kayano 22 instead.

The old Gel Nimbus 15’s and 16’s and 17’s were very highly regarded by many PF sufferers as well, but we feel the newer 18’s are even better and the best bet for anyone with high arches.

Pros: Awesome cushioning, strong heel support, suitable for high arch feet (supination). The new model (Nimbus 22) is very comfortable and we feel an improvement over the 21.

Cons: Durability is questionable. Also, these shoes tend to be a bit on the heavy side, which may be a problem if you want to do long distance running or you intend to stand on your feet all day.

Recommended Type of Foot: Supination

2 New Balance M1540 v2

New Balance Men's M1540V2 Optimum Control Running Shoe, Black, 12 4E US

Men’s New Balance M1540 V2

 New Balance Women's W1540V2 Optimum Control Running Shoe, White/Blue, 8 B US

Woman’s New Balance M1540 V2

These are some seriously comfortable shoes. The New Balance M1540 V2‘s have a strong midsole which provides protection against shock and most foot types can fit these shoes. Son in the heel and arch support categories, these shoes are second to none. They are COMFORTABLE in every regard.

These New Balance shoes, additionally, provide a good level of motion control – from what we’ve seen, nearly the best motion control range.

But it’s not just me who swears by these. In fact, this shoe model is one of the highest rated among those who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and regularly receives recommendations online from fellow Plantar Fasciitis sufferers. This is personally MY GO TO SHOE.

Note that the 1540 replace the 1123 model which is also an outstanding shoe for PF, if you can still find it.

Buy New Balance M1540V2 on Amazon

Alternative Recommendation

New Balance 990v3This is another model that’s rated as good for plantar fasciitis. It’s a good all round shoe and if you fall in the middle ground as far as pronation and arch height go, this may be the shoe you want to look at. They are also big enough where you can easily add in inserts for additional support – good if you want to take them for running, but also good if you just want a pair of comfortable walk around shoes with great support.

3 Asics Gel Kayano 22

If you have FLAT feet and Plantar Fasciitis, THESE are the shoes to buy!

For Men with Flat Feet

ASICS Men's Gel Kayano 22 Running Shoe, Charcoal/Silver/Lime, 9 M US

ASICS Gel Kayano 22

For Women with Flat Feet ASICS Women's Gel Kayano 22 Running Shoe, Silver Grey/Pistachio/Fiery Coral, 11 M US

Asics Gel Kayano 22

We’ve recommended the Kayano line of shoes for years and this holds true with their latest model as of 2016,  the Kayano 22.

Now If you have high arches, you will want to look at the Nimbus 18. However, if you have low arches or flat feet AND plantar fasciitis, then the Asics Gel Kayano 22 is your salvation.

These shoes have a lot of ‘new’ technology in them such as the patented Asics DueMax support system which provides superior arch support though more rigid foam under the arch area. The midsole itself is also very firm.

As such, for anyone who is an overpronator, the Kayano 22’s are what you should be buying and trying first.

Pros: superior arch support and heel support, comfortable cushioning

Cons: More expensive than alternatives

Recommended Type of Feet: Flat feet (overpronator)

Brook’s Men’s Adrenaline GTS16

For Women with Flat Feet

 Women's Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 Silver/Bluebird/BlueTint Size 8 M US

Brook’s Woman’s Adrenaline GTS16

This is the update to Brook’s GTS15, their most popular shoe and widely hailed as the best shoe out of all their lineups. The main difference is the GTS 16 has slightly less heel cushioning than the older model (the 14 and 15).

Having said that, the Brooks GTS16 still offers superior comfort and very good heel support. These shoes work for running, walking, or just casual strolling around. The GTS16 is particularly suitable for people with moderate Plantar Fasciitis issues and who have flat feet (over pronation). Brooks are quite durable so you get your money’s worth out of them.

Note, the GTS15 (and earlier models such as the GTS14) are also highly rated for plantar fasciitis and some say has additional cushioning of the heel area over the GTS16 and 17, so consider taking a look at one of the older models (if you can actually find one for sale still( if you have severe Plantar Fasciitis and trying that out too – you may find it fits and feels slightly better than the sequel GTS16.

Pros: Great arch support, good heel support, comfortable, very durable

Cons: Can be a bit heavier and have a thicker design

Foot Arch Type: Overpronation (Flat Feet)

5 Saucony Guide 9

Men’s Saucony Guide 9

 Saucony Women's Guide 9 Running Shoe, Grey/Blue/Citron, 9 M US

Women’s Saucony Guide 9

The Saucony’s are well established as one of the better shoes for plantar fasciitis. As of 2016, Saucony has the Guide 9, a well ‘heeled’ sequel to the outstanding Guide 8. For stability and comfort, the Saucony are not to be ignored. They have a special technology called the PowerGrid midsole which offers a superior impact absorption. Additionally, this model also has the SRC Crash Pad and IBR sole technologies which are fancy names for a rigid midsole that offers even more stability.

The only downsides are these shoes are a bit more on the narrow side, so if you have wide feet, you may find the Saucony not so comfortable. Also highly recommended is their last year model, the Saucony Guide 8 which is a good alternative to the new model.

6 Saucony Kinvara 7

Men’ Saucony Kinvara 7

Saucony Women's Kinvara 7 Running Shoe, White/Pink, 6 M US

Woman’s Saucony Kinvara 7

An outstanding pair of shoes for those who have a more minimalist taste in running shoes. They tread a fine balance between offering some arch support while not offering too much. So if you have flatter feet, the Kinvara 7’s are a good bet.

If you were a fan of the Kinvara 6’s and 5’s (which were highly rated as good running shoes for plantar fasciitis), then know that the Saucony Kinvara 7 are more narrow. So beware if you have wide feet!

Pros: Minimalistic and light. Offers good support and highly regarded for long distant running in general.

Cons: Durability issues

An update on the highly popular GT200 2 line (one of Asic’s best). This show is even lighter than the previous model! And like the previous model, it offers stability and strong support for your heal with the ability to absorb the shock of long distance running. IF you are an overpronater, these shoes are definitely your fit.

They are not as minimalistic as the Saucony Kinvara but provide a bit more support around the heel area. Quite a few people with long lasting Plantar Fasciitis injuries have stated these shoes have done wonders for PF.

Pros: Great stability, good for neutral feet (and also overpronators), provides a lot of comfort.

Cons: a bit narrow

Best Walking Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

Casual shoes are less demanding than running shoes. As such, they can be heavier, offer more stability and support. Typically, you are best off having a pair or running shoes to handle your more movement orientated activities and a pair of casual shoes for everything else. This often works better (and your sore feet with than you)  with less pain involved on your poor feet, rather than to try and use on single pair of shoes for every activity.

Because there is a huge difference in style between casual shoes for men and women, we’ve broken this section into a men’s section and women’s section to better give your advice.

If you want more running shoe recommendations, or you want more detailed recommendations ONLY about running shoes, please check out our Ultimate Guide to the Best Running Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis guide.

Best Tennis Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

If you are looking for a specific shoe for tennis (or just to walk around with), then you need a more specialized shoe than regular old running shoes or sneakers. These are shoes specifically designed for sport activities where you are on your feet on a hard surface (think Tennis). However, you can certainly use these plantar fasciitis tennis shoe recommendations on the tennis court just as easily as you can wear them off the court as a stylish walking shoe or sneaker type shoe. If you want more specific shoes for tennis that are suitable for foot pain issues or plantar fasciitis pain, then look at our dedicated post giving some specific and detailed recommendations for the best tennis shoes for plantar fasciitis.

What is a Tennis Shoe?

While some people use ‘tennis shoe’ and ‘sneakers’ interchangeably, we are actually recommending shoes that can be used specifically for the sport of tennis, or vigorous foot activities on hard surfaces. You can use these tennis shoe recommendations as walking shoes, or if you fancy, sporty looking sneakers.

What Arch Do You Have?

The arch is located on the bottom of your foot and runs from the heel to your toes. A high arch is an arch that is more elevated than normal. Having a high arch can cause pain to your feet and legs because of the stress put on the area between the ankle and toes. If you have high arches, you need a shoe with more support to help keep your foot stable as you are walking or running. It can be tough to fit into shoes if you have high arches, but this guide will assist you in finding the right tennis shoes for high arches.

The Final Word

We’ve listed some of the highest rated shoes for plantar fasciitis from what people with PF recommend online, on various forums, through amazon customer reviews, and our own opinions.

However, if you want to know which one of these shoes IS the absolute best for your specific, we can’t give you a solid answer because you may find one model works better than one of the other models.

We recommend you look specifically at WHAT sort of activity you intend to do during the day (running, walking about, hiking, standing all day at work, walking in the house, etc) then base your shoe buying choice AROUND that specific activity. Naturally, your day will probably consist of a couple different activity types; as such, we recommend you buy several different kinds of shoes for each activity, rather than one single ‘use for everything’ shoe.

Remember that supportive and cushioning are two very important things to look for when shopping for the various types of shoes listed above.  Just because a pair of shoes offers great cushioning does not mean they offer good support, stability, and motion control — all essential features needed IF you suffer from PF.

Furthermore, if you do not wear shoes in your home, consider wearing slippers as this will help to further reduce your pain.

But you can rest assured that thousands of people do swear by all of these shoes as a good shoe to wear when dealing with Plantar Fasciitis.

We’ve done our best to give a good list of recommended shoes for each activity type. However, there are other methods of curing Plantar Fasciitis besides shoes. Please read our How to Treat Plantar Fasciitis for Good article which covers some of the other effective plantar fasciitis treatments.
