I’ve found stuff that works, and many other people have too. But there is no one solution that works for everyone, and as of yet, no magical cure. Try different therapies such as shoe inserts, stretches, or finding the right shoe for your foot type to cut down on the symptoms. Sometimes different combinations work for different people.
But there is no ONE single solution that works for everyone, and as of 2017, no magical cure.
I’m going to level with you here. It’s likely that you’ll have to apply a multi-pronged approach to your plantar fasciitis treatment to deal with it (either completely cured or to bring it to a manageable level).
You’ll like need to Tty different therapies such as orthotic shoe inserts, stretches, or finding the right shoe for your foot type to cut down on the symptoms. Sometimes different combinations of therapies and treatments work for different people.
But a good pair of shoes sure helps too.
Before We Get Started
Do realize that finding a pair of shoes that works with YOUR Plantar Fasciitis is going to be a bit of a trial and error sort of process. Don’t believe whatever sales pitch you read on some websites saying X shoe or Y product will absolutely cure your condition.
This simply is not the case. Your feet are different than someone else’s. SO don’t expect what necessarily works for someone else will work for you. As such, you will probably have to buy a few different pairs of shoes and test them out to see how your feet to respond to them.
I’ve talked to a lot of different people who have this condition, and the solutions (and shoes) that work for one person often do not work so well for other people.
So keep this in mind: Plantar Fasciitis is a highly individualized condition. Everyone walks differently; everyone runs differently; and everyone has a different stride and different way they put weight on their feet. This means that if you are looking for a good shoe that won’t aggravate your plantar fasciitis condition, you may need to try a few different duds before you find a winner.
What to Look for In Plantar Fasciitis Shoes – How to Choose the Right One
Depending on what you want to be doing in your shoes, your type of stride as you walk (do you supinate or pronate), and how high or how flat your feet are, your type of shoe choice will drastically vary.
If you are going to be doing something with a lot of hard impacts on the heel (like running), you’ll want to choose a shoe with strong to very strong arch support, shock absorption, and good cushioning. As to how much of each, well, that depends on your specific feet.
There are a couple things to keep in mind when finding a shoe to wear if you have PF:

Now there is a high degree of variability between each of these that work better for some people than others. But in general, you do want to choose a shoe that has strong heel support and firm arch support with softer cushioning.
About Pronation and Choosing Running Shoes
In general, you’ll want to look at your arch — how high or how low it is. This often can determine (but not always) by your gait as you walk — whether you under pronate, over pronate or are neutral.
There are three general categories: neutral pronation (normal arch), under pronation or supination (low arch or flat feet), over pronation (very high arch).
Different shoes are built for DIFFERENT foot arch types, so if you are an underpronator who buys and wears over pronated shoes, you could be causing INJURY to yourself. This is even more important if you have plantar fasciitis!
If you are looking for everyday casual shoes, you are going to need something that is soft on your feet but provides you with enough support that your PF will not flare up. These are our recommendations for running shoes for men AND women who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis. Keep in mind that ALL of these recommendations come highly recommended by people, but you may need to try a few different models before you find the one that best suits you.
Many runners experience Plantar Fasciitis at some point. Many times it is caused by the wrong running shoes, a sudden increase in mileage or just the structure of your foot can cause inflammation in the plantar fascia. In addition, overpronation, overuse, and shoes that are old or that have rips in them can cause inflammation as well.
Note that while these are RUNNING SHOES and are designed for running, you can just as well use them as walking shoes or casual shoes. As such we feel running shoes are often the most versatile of the plantar shoe recommendations we can give, since you can use them for ALL activities you might need them for (sports, walking, etc). Why I Recommend The Nimbus 18
The Nimbus 18 is a big winner in the cushioning department and pretty much takes the cake the past couple years for combining firm heel and arch support into a comfortable running shoe design. I’ve been recommending the Nimbus since 2015 and every — and the updated models have carried the torch every year.
And yes the Gel 19’s are out, but they are a step back in every way from the 18’s (see more at the end of this post why).
The Gel cushioning system will absorb the shock your feet would normally feel and returns that into a responsive ride. The Gel Nimbus shoes are a bit stiffer than you might find in some of the other competing brands such as New Balance Running shoes.
Overall, if it comes to one pair of shoes for the average person with average feet (i.e. nonflat), then the best shoe you can get is the Asics Gel Nimbus 18. This shoe is a real winner because of the vastly improved midsole over earlier models. The better-supported heel helps provide more stability to the foot – something that’s essential if you don’t want to aggravate plantar fasciitis.
Note that the Asics Gel Nimbus 18 are best suited for people who have a higher arch (we call this supination). If you have relatively flat feet (over pronator), then you want to look at the Asics Kayano 22 instead.
The old Gel Nimbus 15’s and 16’s and 17’s were very highly regarded by many PF sufferers as well, but we feel the newer 18’s are even better and the best bet for anyone with high arches.
Gel Nimbus 19’s vs Gel Nimbus 18’s: Stick with 18’s for now
Note that you can now get the Gel Nimbus 19’s. However, the new model is in some ways a step back for ASICS Nimbus line with less cushioning (and smaller sized). The toe box is smaller. If you do opt the new 19’s, get a size larger than normal. There’s a lot of complains about the the quality being worse than the 18’s.
I don’t want to get into a feature war between models and brands — it means nothing at the end of the day other than for advertising. However, there are a few features that make this one stand out.
The Nimbus 18 has a redesigned heel counter that will clutch your heel just a little tighter than the previous versions. In addition, the collar area will be a little more snug on your foot. This is designed to hold your foot better in place as you move. The cushioning in somewhat firmer in the heel and forefoot as well. Since the heel counter and cushioning has been redesigned, you will find this shoe to be slightly heavier than the previous versions.
What People are Saying
Those who wear these shoes on a regular basis say they great because of the cushioning and the comfort they offer. Some people have worn them for 12-hour shifts where others have worn them while walking through Disneyland. Both had positive experiences and noticed their pain from Plantar Fasciitis was reduced. Some did note that these shoes were too soft for their feet, so that is something to keep in mind.
Pros: Awesome cushioning, strong heel support, suitable for high arch feet (supination) with the 18. However, the new model (Nimbus 19) is NOT as good as the 18 and we don’t recommend the 19 if you can get your hands on the 18.
Cons: Durability is questionable. Also, these shoes tend to be a bit on the heavy side, which may be a problem if you want to do long distance running or you intend to stand on your feet all day. May have too much cushioning for some feet.
Recommended Type of Foot: Supination
These are some seriously comfortable shoes. The New Balance M1540 V2‘s have a strong midsole which provides protection against shock, and most foot types can fit these shoes. Son in the heel and arch support categories, these shoes are second to none. They are COMFORTABLE in every regard.
These New Balance shoes, additionally, provide a good level of motion control – from what we’ve seen, nearly the best motion control range.
But it’s not just me who swears by these. In fact, this shoe model is one of the highest rated among those who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and regularly receives recommendations online from fellow Plantar Fasciitis sufferers. This is personally MY GO TO SHOE.
Note that the 1540 replace the 1123 model which is also an outstanding shoe for PF, if you can still find it.
The New Balance 990 v4 are a stability shoe that can be used for daily running or for everyday wear. They have breathable mesh, so your feet will be comfortable in all kinds of conditions as well as a lace keeper to ensure the tongue stays in place. These durable shoes are great for both wide and narrow feet because they come in a variety of sizes.
The midsole of the 990 v4 has an ACTEVA LITE foam that gives you stability and support as you move through your step. Furthermore, you will experience a reduction in overpronation because of the design of the midsole. The upper is not as constrictive as past designs, so your feet will have a little more room.

These shoes are 30 percent more breathable than the previous version and have even more reflectivity so you can be comfortable running in conditions that have low light. The lace keeper is nice to have because the tongue won’t slip while you run, so you will be comfortable.

This is the update to 2016 Brook’s GTS16, their most popular shoe model lineup and widely hailed as the best in the Brook running shoe lineups. Both the GTS15 and 16 was a superior shoe for those with plantar fasciitis pain — one of the best shoes for plantar fasciitis for those with overpronation.
The GTS 15 has slightly more heel cushioning than the GTS16.
The GTS17, the 2017 model as of now, is a minor improvement over the GTS16, especially in the toe box area which is slightly wider and more comfortable.
The main difference is the GTS 16 has slightly less heel cushioning than the older model’s (the 14 and 15) while the 17 is a sort of compromise but with a slightly bigger toe-box area (a good improvement we feel).
The Brooks GTS16 still offers superior comfort and very good heel support and is now a cheaper alternative to the GTS17 if you want to save money. These shoes work for running, walking, or just casual strolling around.
The GTS is particularly suitable for people with moderate Plantar Fasciitis issues and who have flat feet (over pronation), specifically for those looking for outstanding mid-sole support. Brooks are quite durable so you get your money’s worth out of them.
Note, the GTS15 (and earlier models such as the GTS14) are also highly rated for plantar fasciitis, and some say has additional cushioning of the heel area over the GTS16 and 17, so consider taking a look at one of the older models (if you can actually find one for sale still).
Pros: Great arch support, good heel support, comfortable, very durable; one of the best mid-sole supports in shoe suitable for plantar fasciitis. Excellent toe-box width for those with wider feet.

Foot Arch Type: Overpronation (Flat Feet)
The Saucony Guide 10 is a stability shoe that fits comfortably and provides a good amount of cushioning. It is a responsive shoe that also provides a lot of traction, which is nice if you want to take it for a run or use it while at work.
The Saucony’s are well established as one of the better shoes for plantar fasciitis. As of 2017, Saucony has the Guide 10, a well ‘heeled’ sequel to the outstanding Saucony Guide 9, which was featured as a top pick on our 2016 version of this list.
For stability and comfort, the Saucony are not to be ignored. They have a special technology called the PowerGrid midsole which offers a superior impact absorption. Additionally, this model also has the SRC Crash Pad and IBR sole technologies which are fancy names for a rigid midsole that offers, even more, stability.
The only downsides are these shoes are a bit more on the narrow side, so if you have wide feet, you may find the Saucony not so comfortable. Also highly recommended is their last year model, the Saucony Guide 9 which is a good alternative to the new 10 model and was featured on our list last year. The benefit is that it’s about 60 percent of the cost, so it can be had for a steal. The new model features a few updates, but frankly, they are pretty minor and you can get by just as well on the older model if budget is a concern.
The Guide 10 features EVERUN technology, which is an extra layer of cushioning that absorbs and then disperses shock when your foot hits the ground. This gives you a better running experience and a smoother transition through your step. In addition, the shoe features an SRC Landing Zone to protect your heel, which is important if you have Plantar Fasciitis.
Why They are Worth It
The toe box in the Saucony Guide 10 is roomy and allows your toes to sit naturally. Professionals who tested this shoe found that they didn’t have their normal foot pain when they ran with this shoe. The durability of the shoe combined with the price gives this shoe a good quality rating.

And like the previous model, the GT 2000 5 offers stability and strong support for your heel with the ability to absorb the shock of long distance running. IF you are an overpronater, these shoes are definitely your fit.
They are not as minimalistic as the Saucony Kinvara but provide a bit more support around the heel area. Quite a few people with long lasting Plantar Fasciitis injuries have stated these shoes have done wonders for PF.
The midfoot system will provide you support if you overpronate, which is important for those who have Plantar Fasciitis. Another important feature is the External Heel Clutching System, which also will keep your feet in place. The shoe is relatively lightweight for a stability shoe and is designed to correct overpronation, which those with Plantar Fasciitis tend to do. These shoes will support your arch so it will not collapse when you walk.
As such, these are good stability, motion control shoes.
Brooks GTS 17 vs Brooks Beasts 16
The Beast’s are often compared to the GTS model (by the same company). Both are good shoes, but the Beasts or more all-round running shoes (good for short or long distance running) while Brooks GTS 17 are better for running shorter distances. I find the GTS lighter than the Beasts, but the Beasts are more comfortable, which make them better all round ‘walking’ or ‘running shoes.’
There is certainly room enough for having BOTH shoes in your wardrobe.
The Brooks Beast 16 has a heel counter that you will need if you have Plantar Fasciitis. This will help the overpronation and keep your foot in place as you move through your stride. The shoe features a crash pad to keep the provide extra stability and smooth transition from your heel to the toe. Furthermore, you will notice a medial post to give you even more stability.
